The kids have been very interested in skate boarding since they attended the local skate ministry known as the Serious JuJu skate ministry. They love it with a passion and Trevor asked if we could put some Skate ramps in our garage. I thought it would be awesome to do that for him so I figured I’d ask JD one of the founders of Serious JuJu how much it would cost to get some ramps built for our garage. Little did I know he was praying about opening another skate ministry in the area that we live in.
So instantly he wondered if we’d be interested in starting a skate ministry at our home. I told him I would have to talk it over with my wife and pray about it. While talking to him about it, I realized we were in a perfect location for a skate ministry. We have a two car garage that we don’t use for anything other then excess storage (That contains 2 extra couches we never had a use for until now). Also we live across from a school where the street is fenced and closed for a whole block to traffic. That makes the street perfect for skating safely without the worry of the kids being run over or hit by vehicles.
After church I brought it up to Stacey. We were talking about how we had the option of beginning a skate ministry and how we wanted to make sure it was in Gods plan to do so. While talking about it the kids heard and started gathering kids to start the skate ministry without our knowledge. While discussing if we should do it or not. We heard the lawn mower start. I was thinking that is odd? Who started the lawn mower? We looked out the window to see a group of kids clearing weeds and mowing long grass away from our garage. I am embarrassed to say we neglected our back yard over the summer and our garage was camouflaged behind very tall weeds. It was barely recognizable to the human eye.
A couple of them started on the outside while the others went to work on the inside. I looked at my wife and said, well honey it looks like we have our answer. We went to bed that night and prayed hard about it and asked God to let us be sure this is what he wanted us to do. Tossing and turning all night I thought about how cool it would be to be able to preach the gospel to the kids and give them a positive place to come when they needed it. A place where they could come and feel safe and have fun.
Today at work I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was totally excited and couldn’t wait to get it rolling. When I got home I mentioned nothing to Stacey about it. I wanted to see how she felt without influencing her decision by showing her my excitement about it. We did the normal hugs and kisses and the how was your day thing as usual. Then she told me one of Trevor’s friends burrowed his bike from the garage and she had to talk to him about not taking our things without asking. She also stated to me that we needed to get a lock for the garage especially since we are going to have skate ramps and equipment out there.
So needless to say she was just as excited to get started as I was and still am! I called JD and let him know that we were in. He told me he was totally stoked when he originally talked to me about it and I showed interest. He said he was extremely stoked now that we decided to commit to it. So we will officially be opening up the Serious JuJu Eastside skate ministry in a few weeks! We already have a bunch of kids who want to be a part of it. I am extremely excited and can’t wait to see what the Lord does with all of this.
